Grace
by Ann Smiley

Grace walked with us--
With sparkling, laughing eyes,
A voice that rang like fairy laughter,
A humor warm, and wise.

Grace loved us all--
As mother, wife, grandmother,
We were all her precious darlings,
Adored above all others.

Grace taught us well--
To wear our bravest smile,
To set our chins and face the world,
With dignity and style.

Grace went home--
A quiet, peaceful thing,
Knowing heaven beckoned to her,
Ready for her wings.

Grace lives still--
In the way we move our hands,
And when we hold our shoulders proud,
Her gentle presence stands.

Grace walks with us--
Although her body's gone,
She gave us all such strength and love,
Her spirit lingers on.

This interactive site has been created in loving memory of our Grandmother Nickie. She touched so many hearts and lives, even the internet seems insufficient to contain all the loving thoughts of those of us who miss her. Please add your thoughts and memories to ours, or simply light a virtual candle or add a flower, sand dollar or cross, by clicking Add Your Memories, below.

If you have a special photo of Nickie, we'd love to add it to this site. Scan it at 72 DPI, save it as a JPG, and e-mail it to Ann and we'll add it, here!

My Aunt Nickie wrote to me regularly, most recently in June. I can't recall a single letter through the years that did not in some way encourage and compliment me. For that I was appreciative, and from that affected by her example of generosity. Just an observation about her last letter: How could a ninety-one year old matriarch write so beautifully, both in content and penmanship? In many ways, her death makes me want to try harder. With love from Tom, Gigi, JT, Ashley & Katy

Grandmother, we said goodbye to you yesterday. We cried and prayed and laughed and held each other, and remembered. We rejoiced in your legacy, mourned your passing, and took comfort in the traces of you that linger on in us all. We will miss you so painfully, but we have found some peace, too. That is another of your legacies: Even at the very end, you were teaching us by example, with your gentle faith and serenity. Thank you, for that final gift. All my love, Ann

When I think of Aunt Nickie, I think of...."Skipper Doo," her special name for Unk,...dipping her comb in the holy water and I caught her...! ... and calling me "Ah-Bee Dearest," my childhood name, my WHOLE life! ....her pretty Fielder smile and beautiful big blue eyes were so like my dad's.....

I was fortunate to have Nickie enrich my life and inspire me the past few years. She is a special soul who will remain in my memory forever. Ezra Pound wrote: "What thou lovest well is the true heritage". In this time of celebrating her life, it becomes most evident what is Nickie's heritage to everyone she touched -- to love life. I am honored and privileged to have known her.

Aunt Nickie was a beautiful person both inside and out. As a child, I remember that she never raised her voice and was always so nice and kind! She was also the first Pi Beta Phi in the family starting a tradition. There have been four in the family since then. We will miss her so much. Love, Sis

My talent is art, inherited from Kings and Fielders. But it was my mother's devotion and guidance that brought me to where I am today. She shall remain with me through the last picture I ever paint.

Nickie King seems to me best remembered as one who was totally devoted. The Oxford English Dictionary (the O.E.D. to Nickie, the perennial Anglophile) describes 'devoted' as "very loyal and faithful", a person who "gives up or applies oneself or one's time and energy to some purpose, activity or person". Whether it was caring for three brothers during the depression years, working at high government levels in Washinton, D.C. on restoring an historic park in our nation's capital, being a "root" in a truly exceptional family, or tending to the needs of her immediate family, husband, "shoots". "offshoots" or "buds", Nickie was always devoted. She almost always smiled and was an eternal optomist, a rare blessing, having come from difficult circumstances and cynical times in earlier years. The loss of such a loved and loving one is easier to bear when considering that her passage has finally given her release from the long and painful physical suffering she quietly endurred. We, the recipients of her devotion will all miss her.

Aunt Nickie, When you told me you knew the personal life stories of all the staff members on your cruises, it showed me what kind, caring, and inquisitive person you are. I'll miss you. Love, Carrie (Stevens)
